SAWAN FOUNDATION SUPPORTS THE GREATER HUNTSVILLE HUMANE SOCIETY

(Huntsville – Dec 7, 2018)  The Sawan Foundation recently donated $9,000 to the Greater Huntsville Humane Society (GHHS).  The money donated by the Sawan Foundation is stipulated to be used only for food for the animals in the shelter.  It is not to support the infrastructure or other parts of the shelter.   The reason for this is that by supporting the food for the animals in the shelter, it allows the GHHS to better utilize their resources toward the community.  According to GHHS’s annual report, the cost of the shelter and animal care uses over half the annual resources of the GHHS, and the GHHS receives no state or city funding, and no national organizational funds. Therefore they are completely supported by the local community.

Consequently, by donating the cost of food to the Greater Huntsville Humane Society, the Sawan Foundation is not only supporting the rescued animals, but the community at large.   The GHHS provides numerous community opportunities for volunteering and outreach such as the Helping Paws program – providing both veterinary assistance and pet food, the King’s Kitchen - the largest pet food bank in Alabama, and the Good Samaritan program that distributes vouchers to low income pet owners for emergency veterinary assistance.   These outreach programs are supported through other generous donations as well as the GHHS Thrift Store and fundraisers.

Dr. Sandhu, the founder of the Sawan Foundation, firmly believes in animal well-being. The Greater Huntsville Humane Society is a no-kill animal shelter dedicated to the humane care and treatment of animals, so it was a perfect match for the Sawan Foundation.  The mission of the GHHS is to use rescue, training, adoption, education, and advocacy to ensure the humane treatment and welfare of all animals.  As an example of this, the shelter had 740 successful adoptions in 2017.
